3 killed, 9 worshippers injured in Afghan mosque shooting

SHAFAQNA – Three people were killed and nine others wounded in a shooting at a mosque in Afghanistan’s eastern province of Paktia, Xinhua News Agency reported on Saturday citing the country’s Interior Ministry.

“The shooting took place at a mosque in Police District 2 of provincial capital Gardez city at round 08:45 p.m. (local time) when worshipers were offering Tarawih prayers,” the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry blamed the enemies of Afghanistan for the attack — a term referring to the Taliban.
However, no group has yet claimed responsibility for the incident.

Authorities strongly condemned the attack, which came as Afghans celebrate the holy month of Ramadan.

Earlier on Saturday, Afghanistan’s government declared Saturday a national Mourning Day to pay tribute to those killed in recent terrorist attacks.
