41 people sick of gas leakage in India

SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association)- At least 41 people have fallen sick after a chlorine gas leak from a preservative factory in India’s central city of Bhopal.

Workers at the factory and nearby units complained of breathlessness and vomiting following the gas leakage in an industrial area in the Raisen district on Saturday evening.

“It was around 12:50 pm that the gas started leaking. Of the 41 affected by the gas, three have been referred to Bhopal while the rest were discharged after primary treatment,” local police official, Narendra Singh Rathore, said.

He added that investigations are underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the entire incident.

The incident comes three days before the 30th anniversary of a catastrophic chemical gas leak that killed several thousand people in Bhopal in the world’s worst industrial disaster.

More than half a million people were poisoned in the industrial disaster, which was caused by a deadly gas leak at a pesticide manufacturing plant run by the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh State, on the night of December 2, 1984.

Between 8,000 and 10,000 people were reportedly killed within the first three days of the incident and another 8,000 or more have lost their lives from gas-related diseases ever since.
