45 people killed by Boko Haram attack in Nigeria

SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association)- An attack suspected to have been carried out by Takfiri Boko Haram militants has killed at least 45 people in northeast Nigeria, officials and witnesses say.

The attack occurred in Azaya Kura village in the Mafa area of Borno State on Wednesday, said Shettima Lawan, the caretaker chairman of the region’s local government.

“How can some people be so wicked to kill innocent people, 45 people at once, without any confrontation?” Lawan said, adding, “I wish to appeal to the federal government to take urgent steps and rescue our people from imminent extinction.”

Some residents said the number of the fatalities could rise.

“So far, 45 men have been killed and there are others that died in the bushes as a result of bleeding from bullet wounds,” said one resident, identifying himself only as Jabiru.

This comes as the Nigerian Justice Minister Mohammed Adoke said on Monday that President Goodluck Jonathan is to ask the country’s National Assembly to extend the state of emergency in the northeastern states of Yobe, Borno and Adamawa over Boko Haram violence.

Boko Haram, whose name means “Western education is forbidden,” has claimed responsibility for a number of deadly shooting and bombing attacks in various parts of Nigeria.

On April 14, the Takfiri group kidnapped 276 students from their secondary school in the northeastern town of Chibok in Borno, triggering worldwide outrage. Reports say 57 of the girls managed to escape, but 219 are still missing.
