Alexandria looks to break Guinness World Record for longest table

SHAFAQNA - Alexandria volunteers are helping break the fasting cycle of Muslims in Egypt on Friday by putting together the world’s longest Iftar table.

With an Iftar (fast breaking meal) table set to be more than 3 kilometers long, the coastal city is also looking to break a Guinness World Record.

Ahram Online reports 800 volunteers are taking part of the feeding event, known as the Mawaed Al Rahman.

The event will feed 10,000 impoverished Muslims breaking their dawn-to-dusk fast during the holy month of Ramadan.

Attendees are welcomed to join the table, which will extend from Alexandria’s Stanley to San Stefano districts, two hours before sunset where they will be offered food by 500 servers. “The goal of this table is to restore the honorable tourist side of Alexandria,” Alexandria Governor Hany el-Meseery said.

He also said that about 7,500 meals, provided with the help of the Egyptian army, naval and police forces will be donated.

The Cairo Post reported a group of young people called “The Radioactive Team” suggested the idea of building the extensive table looking to break the record set by another Iftar table in 2013. The team contacted restaurants, along with both private and public institutions to participate.

The event is being sponsored by various meat and fish restaurants along with the Egyptian Businessmen Association and The Chamber of Commerce of Alexandria.
