Almusawi: right to boycott elections must not be expropriated

SHAFAQNA – The opposition societies in Bahrain have been calling for a wide  boycott of the sham legislative and municipal elections set on November 22nd. In the meanwhile, some Bahraini officials have made statements threatening citizens, who intend to exercise their right to boycott, with repressive and discriminatory measures.

” The Authority is heading for these elections while various violations such as arbitrary arrests, torture and enforced disappearance are ongoing”, said Sayed Hadi Almusawi, member of Secretariat in Al Wefaq National Islamic Society and head of its human rights department. ” These people have faced killings, detention, layoffs and all sorts of terrorism and will not step back now. Each citizen must enjoy his right to boycott or participate in the elections, this right is ensured by international law. Our people will continue their struggle for real democracy regardless of the official repression”.
