Bahrain activist is held incommunicado by Bahrain regime

SHAFAQNA – A week after his arrest by the Bahraini authorities, Hussain Jawad, prominent rights activists and Chairman of the European-Bahraini Organization for Human Rights (EBOHR) is held incommunicado.

Jawad was arrested at his place of residence on February 16, 2015 by 20 masked police offices in plain clothes confirmed his wife, Asma Darwish.

His home was raided, his passport confiscated and several of his belongings — mobile phones and computer — confiscated. It is important to note that at  no time was Jawad informed of the reason of his arrest.

Jawad is being detained at the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), an incarceration center well known for its abuse of prisoners. According to his wife who was allowed to speak to him for a few seconds on the first day of his arrest, he suffered ill-treatment by the hands of the authorities.

Asma Darwish has not been allowed to speak to her husband since.

The Observatory for Human Rights issued earlier this week a statement in which it called on the Bahraini authorities to release Jawad immediately and unconditionally.

The statement read, “The Observatory strongly condemns the arrest of Mr. Jawad, and considers that he is targeted solely for his legitimate human rights activities. The Observatory calls on the Bahraini authorities to immediately release him and to drop all the charges against him (see background information). The Observatory is further concerned by the allegations of ill-treatment in detention, and urges the authorities to guarantee the physical and psychological integrity of Mr. Jawad, as well to open an immediate and effective investigation into these allegations and to bring those responsible to justice.

The Observatory more generally urges the Bahraini authorities to put an end to all acts of harassment – including at the judicial level – against Mr. Jawad, and to comply with the relevant international norms and standards, in particular the United Nations (UN) Declaration on Human Rights Defenders, adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 9, 1998, and international human rights standards and instruments ratified by Bahrain.”
