Bahrain arrests 10 as Ashura crackdown

SHAFAQNA – Bahraini security forces arrested 10 people on Wednesday night as part of Manama’s intensifying crackdown against Ashura commemorations.
The ten were later released after signing a document, pledging not to put up any flags and banners associated with the Shiite religious occasion.

The arrests came as security forces swept through the northern Bahraini villages of Shakhura and Abu Saiba, where they removed all Ashura manifestations.

Bahrain’s Shiite majority is prohibited from observing Ashura, which commemorates the martyrdom of the grandson of Islam’s Prophet Mohammad, Imam Hussein.
