Bayynat/Beirut’s Friday Prayer Sermons

SHAFAQNA (International Shia News Association)-His Eminence, Sayyed Ali Fadlullah, delivered the two Friday prayer sermons at the Imamain Al-Hassanain Mosque, Thul-Qi’da 2nd 1435 H. – September, 26th 2014. Several prominent religious scholars, dignitaries and thousands of believers attended the Jumu’a prayer.

Following is a summary:

The First Sermon

In the first sermon, Sayyed Ali Fadlullah talked about man’s relation with Allah. He refuted the image that some people picture Allah as One Who is waiting for man to make mistakes and commit sins to punish him. He said that Allah is first of all loving, merciful and forgiving, adding that He is very close to us and ready to respond to our prayers and invocations. All what we have to do is address Him from the depth of our hearts in a truthful and spontaneous manner.

The Sayyed cited the examples of the prophets’ relations with Allah, and how they asked him for their needs in a direct, truthful and simple manner that comes right from their hearts and inner souls. Those examples included that of Prophet Ibrahim (a.s.) who asked Allah to show him how He can bring people back to life although he had already believed in Allah, and Allah did go on to show him without being angry with him. The Sayyed also cited the examples of Prophet Moussa (a.s.) and Prophet Yusuf (a.s.) among others. The former asked Allah to let his brother help him, while Prophet Yusuf (a.s.) asked Allah to help him to resist his temptations, with Allah responding to them in both cases.

These examples show us how the prophets were truthful and transparent in asking Allah for help and how Allah graciously responded to them. The Sayyed concluded that this is the way man should base his relation with Allah on; a relation governed with love and trust in Allah, whereby one does not ask anyone but Allah, for He is the Almighty, the Creator, the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving, the One Who gives and the One Who takes.

The second sermon

The Sayyed began the second sermon by talking about Lebanon. He talked about Irsal and asked for dealing with the town wisely, considering that at the same time, its people should avoid turning it into a place where those who undermine the country’s security find haven.

The Sayyed also called for solving the crisis of the Lebanese Army’s prisoners, and called on the government not to rely solely on the international and regional relations, but also adopt a strong stand that studies all feasible options, including negotiations. On another level, the Sayyed reminded the families of the prisoners that although the government should make every effort to free them, they are but soldiers who have taken on themselves to serve the country and to sacrifice their lives if need be to that end. Moreover, the Sayyed called for solving the economic and social problems, including that of the raise in wages without imposing new taxes, and he called on the Lebanese University to review its decision regarding increasing the tuition fees.

On another level, the Sayyed welcomes the recent agreement between Fath and Hamas, believing that it is a step in the right direction as it consolidates the national Palestinian unity.

The Sayyed ended by talking about Hajj, being an occasion that strengthens the unity among Muslims. He called on those who perform this rite to remember that what unites them is far bigger than what separates them and to carry the image of unity they perceive as they perform Hajj back to their countries.
