CAIR calls for hate crime probe of US Muslim

SHAFAQNA – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has called on American authorities to investigate a vandalism attack on a Muslim school in Rhode Island as a hate crime. The United States’ largest Muslim advocacy group urged the officials and national law enforcement authorities on Sunday to bring “the strongest possible charges” against “the perpetrators once they are apprehended.” Unknown assailants broke into the Islamic School of Rhode Island in West Warwick over the weekend and sprayed anti-Muslim, racial slurs on the walls of the institution.

According to West Warwick Police Captain Donald Archibald, the damage went “beyond normal vandalism” and that the perpetrator wrote “senseless, hateful comments.” “The recent spike in anti-Muslim hate rhetoric and bias-motivated attacks on American Muslims and their institutions must be addressed by our nation’s leaders,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. According to Hooper, Muslims in the United States believe the recent killing of three Muslim students in North Carolina was also a hate crime.

A hateful middle-aged white man shot dead Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, his wife Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, 21, and her sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19, near the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus on Tuesday. Family members of the victims called on US authorities to investigate the shootings as a hate crime.

Mohammad Abu-Salha, the father of the two female victims, said they were victims of a hate crime and his pain was indescribable. He demanded that investigators treat the killing as a hate crime. “Please investigate. Please look carefully. I have talked to lawyers. I have talked to law professors. This has hate crime written all over it,” Abu-Salha said. Suzanne Barakat, the sister of Deah, demanded that authorities “investigate these senseless and heinous murders as a hate crime,” adding that they were “execution-style murders.”
