Call for End to Saudi Arabia’s Rights Violations

SHAFAQNA (International Shia News Agency)- Three active Saudi human rights groups have called on the international community to intervene to end the violations committed by the government against people in the east of the country.

In a letter, which has also been sent to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, the groups urged international organizations to help residents in eastern Saudi Arabia, Press TV reported.

The groups working in the field of freedoms and human rights in the kingdom also asked the government to stop what they call abuses and all forms of discrimination against its people.

They said that the Saudi regime should prepare the ground for free local elections.

This comes days after the recent killing of a group of people in restive Eastern Province.

On December 20, at least five people were killed by Saudi forces in the Shia-majority town of Awamia. Several people were also arrested.

There have been numerous demonstrations in Saudi Arabia’s oil-rich Eastern Province since 2011, with the protesters calling for political reform and an end to widespread discrimination. Several people have been killed and many others injured or arrested during the demonstrations.

Activists say there are over 30,000 political prisoners in Saudi Arabia.

The Al Saud government has come under fire from international human rights organizations for failing to address the rights situation in the monarchy. They say Riyadh has persistently implemented repressive policies that stifle freedom of expression, association, and assembly.
