Question: Can a person commit suicide to avoid sins?

The Grand Ayatollah Sistani: Committing suicide is Haram, and is one of the greatest (Kabirah) sins.

Why? Whyis it great sin? What if someone is sick w depression and cant function? Isnt death a mercy?
