Can religious acts become void (Batel) due to obsessive compulsive disorder? The Grand Ayatollah Khamenei’s Fatwa

SHAFAQNA – The Grand Ayatollah Khamenei answered a question about the effect of obsessive compulsive disorder on religious acts.

Question: Can paying attention to obsessive compulsive disorder as well as being Haram cause religious acts to become void?

The Grand Ayatollah Khamenei: In Salaat, it is not allowed to repeat acts due to obsessive compulsive disorder and the Salaat becomes void (Batel); and also repeating and reciting Dhikr based on obsessive compulsive disorder is not allowed and according to Wajib precaution causes the Salaat to become Batel (void).  But in Wudhu and Qosl (ablution), repeating acts out of obsessive compulsive disorder, although it is Haram but does not make them Batel (void), unless the person does not observe one of the conditions correctly (like in the case of performing Wudhu, wash the left hand more than twice or Mas’h (rub) with water out of Wudhu).
