The free-falling Maple Leafs lost their eighth game in a row on Thursday night, and the visiting Phoenix Coyotes added insult to injury at the start of the third period when defenceman Oliver Ekman-Larsson beat Toronto goalie Jonathan Bernier from a few steps past his own blue-line.

The harmless-looking wrister came just five seconds after the faceoff, making it the quickest short-handed goal to start a period in NHL history.

It also set the Coyotes on their way to a 3-1 victory after they came into the final period trailing 1-0.

Bernier made 42 saves on the night, but he might wish to trade a few of those to have the Ekman-Larsson shot back.

And spare a thought for poor Leaf fans. Besides watching their team lose again on home ice, the soft goal may have induced flashbacks to this moment:
