What are the characteristics of a true friendship?

SHAFAQNA – It is narrated from the Prophet of Islam (PBUH) who said: There are three deeds which make a true friendship: 1) Gift each other’s faults (friends should be able to point out each other’s faults in a nice and logical way) 2) Support one another in their absence [do not bad mouth one another] 3) And help each other in difficulty and hardship [1]. In another narration, Imam Sadeq (AS) said: It is inappropriate that a Muslim befriends the corrupt, the ignorant and the liar [2]. Imam Hussain (AS) said: The one, who likes you, criticises you, and the one who is your enemy praises you (praise without any justification, or praise for a bad deed) [3]. Imam Ali (AS) said: Whoever does not consider testing those whom he/she wants to choose as friends as a priority, can be led to socializing with corrupt people [4]. In another narration, Imam Ali (AS) said: The best of your friends is the one who invites you to tell the truth by his/her own truthfulness, and encourages you to good deeds by doing good deeds (the best friend is the one who always tells the truth and is always doing good deeds) [5].
