Christians and Muslims join in prayer for world peace

SHAFAQNA - 450 years ago it was a battle to the death. Yesterday was a different story, with Christians and Muslims joining in prayer for peace between communities around the world.

On Sunday evening Archbishop Charles Scicluna and Imam Mohamed Elsadi led a procession from Couvre Porte in Vittoriosa to the city’s parish church of St Lawrence. There, an interfaith service was held with the two religious leaders praying for peace.

The event was held as part of the activities to commemorate the 450th anniversary of the Great Siege of Malta.

The Archbishop and the Imam were joined by around 300 Knights of Malta from around the world and other distinguished guests, including Justice and Culture Minister Owen Bonnici and Vittoriosa Mayor John Boxall. The prayer session was followed by a wreath laying ceremony at the victory monument in Misrah ir-Rebha.

Grand Master Jean de Valette, after winning the Great Siege went to Vittoriosa to sing the Te Deum for the Order’s victory against the Muslim Turks.  St Lawrence was the Order’s conventual church before the construction of St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta.
