Characters of Righteous People

(Righteous people) are those who believe in the unseen, establish Salaat (five times mandatory daily prayer) and spend in charity part of what We (Allah) have provided them.

Commentary: Five characters of righteous people are mentioned in verse three and four. The first one is to believe in the realm of unseen which is mentioned in the Quran; for example Allah, revelation of the Quran, angles, the Day of Judgment, Heaven and Hell.1

Some unseen such as Heaven and Hell are temporarily absent from our sights but we will see them eventually on the Day of Judgments. Whereas, Allah is not a matter, either physical or metaphysical; hence it is not possible to see and detect Him with our senses.2

The process of revelation of the Quran from the God’s kingdom to heart of the Prophet is not known to us.  No ordinary person has seen descent of the angel Gabriel from the heaven to the earth and observed revelation of verses of the Quran to heart of the Prophet.3

Righteous people, contrary to unbelievers, have no doubt that the Quran is the final revelation from God.  Whereas Unbelievers of Mecca cast doubts on the Divinity of the Holy Quran; they asked the Prophet to bring them a paper book from the heavens that they can feel it with their senses, and they can read it with their sights.4 Allah mentioned that even if He sends them such a book, they still would not believe in it.5

The second quality of righteous people is establishment of daily prayer. The verb used in this verse is “Yuqim_una” which comes from the word of “Iqamah” and “Qyam” meaning “to raise”; like raising a flag, raising a pole, raising mast of sailing boat. When a pole of a tent is raised, then its benefits become visible. “Yuqim_una Salaat” means to perform daily prayers in a manner that all associated benefits of Salaat become apparent in a prayer’s personality.6
