Even people who sleep for eight hours every single night may be surprised by dark circles, which make them look tired even if they’re energetic and well rested. Knowing where your dark circles come from is a key to getting rid of them and preventing them in the future.

Causes of Dark Circles

There are several different reasons for dark circles, including age, genetics and even the season.

As people age, their skin thins and loses some of its collagen. Veins are easier to see, making dark circles more prominent. Also, you may have simply inherited thin skin from your parents. If you’re lacking sleep, blood will pool underneath your eyes and the appearance of dark circles will be magnified because of your thin skin. If you have seasonal allergies, the histamines that are released in your body could cause your blood vessels to swell, which will darken the area under your eyes. Another cause of dark circles may be sun exposure. Sun exposure promotes the breaking down of collagen, which will lead to dark circles. Some women notice dark circles only when they’re going through PMS. Water retention right before menstruation can lead to puffy, dark under-eyes.
