Egypt Grand Mufti: Terrorists distort Quran to justify violence

SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association)- Egypt’s grand Mufti says terrorists misinterpret some 50 verses of the Quran to justify their violent actions.

Addressing a number of young Egyptians in Cairo on Sunday, Shawki Ibrahim Allam said terrorist groups’ understanding of religion is seriously flawed, al-Yawm al-Sabi website reported.

He underlined that knowledgeable religious scholars should be the ones who interpret the Quran and the holy prophet’s (PBUH) Sunnah. While the Egyptian Mufti talks about distorted interpretation of the Quran, some terrorist groups such as the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) have gone a step further shamelessly claim that some verses of the Quran should be left out.

In summer, ISIL said it has decided to leave out some verses of the Quran which it considers to be distorted. The extremist group reportedly said that the verses have been distorted by some clerics in order to serve their political agenda or the interests of other religions like Christianity.

The Surah Al-Kafirun (The Disbelievers) and the verse of Tat’heer (purification) in Surah Al-Ahzaab are among the parts of the Quran which the ISIL wants to omit. The Takfiri group claims it seeks to cleanse Islam and make it pure again. ISIL came into spotlight when militants belonging to the terrorist group took control of the Iraqi city of Mosul on June 10, which was followed by the fall of Tikrit, located 140 kilometers (87 miles) northwest of Baghdad. It has committed heinous crimes against people of Iraq, Syria and Lebanon.
