EU : Iran-G5+1 talks ‘serious and useful’ discussions in Geneva

SHAFAQNA – The EU called negotiations between Iran and G5+1 ‘serious and useful’, saying that the two sides would meet next month again.

Negotiators for Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany striving to reach a complex deal on Tehran’s nuclear program had ‘serious and useful’ discussions in Geneva Sunday (Jan 18) and will meet again next month, the EU said.

High level officials from the United States, Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia met with Iran’s deputy foreign minister Abbas Araghchi for a day of talks as part of “ongoing diplomatic efforts to find a comprehensive solution to the Iranian nuclear issue,” the European Union said in a message sent to journalists.

“They had serious and useful meetings chaired by EU political director Ms Helga Schmid and decided to meet again in early February,” the message said. The negotiations are aimed at hammering out a comprehensive deal which would rein in Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for relief from a tight network of sanctions.

Araghchi had met with senior US officials for three days prior to Sunday’s meeting and also met with Russian officials.
