Everyone in Cardiff has been invited to join Muslims for a meal to break their Ramadan fast

SHAFAQNA – Muslims in Cardiff have invited everyone in the city to join them for two special events and break the Ramadan fast together.

The Iftar events – which have a special aim of helping the capital’s most vulnerable – take place tonight and next Friday between 9pm and 10pm outside City Hall.

As part of the holy month of Ramadan Muslims fast during the day before breaking their fast with Ramadan Iftar each night at sundown and it is customary to invite neighbours to share in the celebrations.

As well as inviting everyone in the city to take part organisers are especially keen to help the vulnerable and the events have been coordinated with the Salvation Army so that homeless people can enjoy a meal.

A special invitation is also being offered to the refugees resettled in Cardiff.

A welcome and a short prayer will be given upon arrival and a wide selection of food prepared by the community will be served afterwards for all to enjoy.

Councillor Ali Ahmed said: “The holy month of Ramadan is about sharing, caring, supporting and donating. Homelessness is a devastating experience which leaves people feeling vulnerable and isolated, so I am delighted to say the support I’ve received from everyone has been fantastic.

Cabinet member for housing and communities Lynda Thorne will also be speaking at the first event on June 16.

She said: “Living on the streets can be a lonely and friendless existence so I’m so pleased that these events will be bringing people from all backgrounds together to connect, for the chance to celebrate Iftar by sharing good food and good company.

“I encourage people to join us in these celebrations.”
