Flu shot clinic being held next week

SHAFAQNA – The St. Francois County Health Center will be offering a flu shot clinic Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. St. Francois County Health Center Immunization Coordinator Jane Howard said they can bill Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurances. “We did get some vaccines in that we can give to the uninsured and underinsured,” said Howard. “There won’t be a charge for them as long as we have them and it’s about 100 doses, otherwise it will be $25.” There will also be a drive-thru clinic Oct. 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the St. Francois County Ambulance District office on Electric St. across from Mineral Area Regional Medical Center in Farmington. Private insurance can not be billed during this clinic.

Howard said they are offering preservative-free quadrivalent vaccines for ages six months and up and FluMist for healthy people ages 2 to 49 years old.

“It’s recommended that everyone get the flu shot,” said Howard. “It’s the best way to prevent yourself from getting the flu and it will also protect others around you. Other things that you can do is good hand washing, cover your mouth or nose when you sneeze and if you think you are coming down with the flu, stay home, don’t go out and spread it.”

The shingles vaccine (Zostavax) will also be available and can be given at the same time as the flu shots. Most insurance will pay 100 percent for those who are 50 to 60 years old. For others the price will vary with their deductible. Those without insurance can purchase the vaccine outright and the cost is $170.

The St. Francois County Health Center is located at 1025 West Main Street in Park Hills. For more information contact the health department at 573-431-1947.
