Ghani vows to depoliticise Kabul police

President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai on Friday stressed the need for depoliticising the Kabul police and appointing professional individuals as police station heads.

Speaking at a joint press conference with UK Prime Minister David Cameron in Kabul, the new Afghan leader paid tribute to NATO troops who died in Afghanistan in battle against insurgents.

Kabul was rocked by suicide attacks for two consecutive days, killing and wounding a number of people, including security personnel and civilians.

Referring to these attacks, Ashraf Ghani said he had serious talks with security officials, asking them to bring reforms to their departments.

“My first action will be depoliticising Kabul police. I have told the Ministry of Interior to appoint individuals as head of police districts according to their skill and capability.”

The president said security officials had been assigned with evolving strategies on how to improve security and they were responsible for their tasks.

The newly-inaugurated president said he thanked NATO troops who died in Afghanistan and families who lost their believed ones here. Foreign troops stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Afghan forces.

“We will remember them,” said Ghani, who has already begun to reset ties with the US and NATO countries by signing the long-delayed security agreement with Washington.

British PM David Cameron, who arrived on a surprise visit in Kabul, acknowledged that the armed forces had paid a “very high price” for bringing “stability” to the country over the past 13 years.

“We’re not going to send combat troops back to Afghanistan because we have trained up an army…to provide that security that Afghanistan needs and we also need in our country.” He added that the “build up” of the Afghan national security forces was the “absolute priority”.
