Giving up the hope of finding the owner of the lost property / the Grand Ayatollah Shobairi’s answer

SHAFAQNA – The Grand Ayatollah Shobairi Zanjani answered a question about giving up the hope of finding the owner of the lost property.

Question: A person has found some gold and has notified the public for a few months but no one has come forward as the owner; what is the duty?

The Grand Ayatollah Shobairi: If it (the time of finding it) is noted, after one year of notifying in public places, can give it to charity (Sadaqah), or take it for himself; but if before the end of a year, gives up the hope of finding the owner, must give it to charity with the permission of the religious authority.
