SHAFAQNA – Nearly 500 people have died of sunstroke in India as the country’s south struggles to survive through a major heat wave, the Hindustan Times newspaper reports.

The highest temperature of around 48 degrees Celsius (118 degrees Fahrenheit) was recorded in the state of Telangana on Sunday, according to the Indian daily.

On Saturday, over 130 people, mainly labourers, died of sunstroke in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, another southern state.

The temperature stood at around 47 degrees Celsius (116 Fahrenheit) in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday, The Hindustan Times said.

According to India’s meteorological services, the temperatures are expected to rise in the coming days.

Temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius are normal for most parts of India between March and June, which is the dry season period in the country. April and May tend to be the hottest months.
