SHAFAQNA – It is narrated from Imam Ali (AS) who said: It is not appropriate that the heart of a pious person be without the fear and hope of God even as much as a blink . Meaning, at any time there must be two state present in the heart of a pious person: First, hope of God; second fear of God, which means hoping for the Divine mercy and kindness as well as fear of God’s punishment at the same time. These two must be together because if only one of them is present, it will find a destructive role.
If only hope is present, then it will find the courage to commit sin; and if only fear is present then the hope of mercy from God is lost, which is the greatest sin in itself. If both hope and fear exist together they will find a constructive role. Fear causes the obedience and hope leads to love and attachment to God, as a result; if a person makes a mistake can always return to God. Of course neither of these two elements must dominate the other; as the experts say: Hope and fear must be the two equal sides of a scale .
