How did Imam Ali (AS) define belief?

SHAFAQNA – In his commentary of the short eloquent saying number 31 by Imam Ali (AS) as mentioned in Nahjul Balaghah, the Grand Ayatollah Javadi Amoli said: Imam Ali (AS) was asked: What is belief (Imaan)? Imam Ali (AS) replied: Belief has four pivotal elements and they are: 1) Patience and forbearance, 2) certainty, 3) justice and 4) Jihad. The Grand Ayatollah Javadi added: Belief (Imaan) means entering somewhere safe; when a person enters a fortified castle, it is said that place is safe, because belief protects the human being in this world and the hereafter.
