Iran official: Final nuclear deal hinges on P5+1 steps

SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association)- An Iranian official says reaching a final deal on the country’s nuclear program is contingent upon the determination of the P5+1 group.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has taken big steps toward settling the issue [of Iran’s nuclear program],” Deputy Foreign Minister for European and American Affairs Majid Takht-e-Ravanchi said in a meeting with Italian Deputy Foreign Minister Lapo Pistelli in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Tuesday.

Iran hopes the other side (P5+1 group) will take “serious steps,” too, to help clinch an overarching agreement soon, said Takht-e-Ravanchi, who doubles as an Iranian nuclear negotiator.

The P5+1 group includes Russia, China, Britain, the US, France and Germany.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian official touched upon the enhancement of relations between Tehran and Rome over the past year, calling for the expansion of ties based on mutual interests and existing potential.

The Italian official, for his part, highlighted Iran’s key status in the region, expressing Italy’s determination to upgrade relations with Iran.

Given the growing insecurity which is the fallout from developments in Iraq and Syria and acts of terrorism by the ISIL terrorist group in the region as well as the existence of different interests between Tehran and Rome, the promotion of cooperation and consultations between Iran and Italy is a must, Pistelli added.

In their latest round of talks, Iran and the P5+1 countries wrapped up a week of intense closed-door nuclear negotiations in the Austrian capital, Vienna, on November 24.

At the end of the talks, the two sides decided to extend their discussions for seven more months until July 1, 2015.
