Iraqi Envoy Highlights Role of Ayatollah Sistani’s Fatwa in Liberation of Mosul

SHAFAQNA – A ceremony was held in the Iraqi embassy in Tehran to celebrate the recent liberation of the city of Mosul from Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorists.

A number of Iranian and Iraqi officials and foreign diplomats residing in Tehran attended the event.

In an address, Iraq’s Ambassador to Iran Rajih Saber Abboud al-Moussawi praised the Iraqi nation for its unity and solidarity in the face of terrorism and for their sacrifices to liberate Mosul.

Noting that Daesh members in Iraq were the nationals of some 100 countries, he stressed that Iraq fought the terror group on behalf of the whole world.

Elsewhere, al-Moussawi lauded the role of religious leadership in Iraq’s victory over Daesh, saying a Fatwa issued by grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, the Shia source of emulation, played a significant part in encouraging the people to join in the fight against the terrorists.

He further thanked the Islamic Republic of Iran for its support for the Iraqi nation and government in the battle against terrorism while the so-called anti-Daesh coalition did nothing to help Baghdad.

Also speaking was Hassan Qashqavi, an Iranian deputy foreign minister, who congratulated Iraq on its victory over terrorism.

He also reiterated Iran’s stance on the need for protecting Iraq’s territorial integrity.

Earlier this month, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared the liberation of Mosul after nearly nine months of urban warfare.

Daesh’s defeat in Mosul three years after taking the city is a major blow for the Takfiri group, which is also losing ground in its operational base in the Syrian city of Raqqa from where it has planned global attacks.
