Iraqi National to 3 Years in Prison over joining a Protest

SHAFAQNA – A Bahraini court on Thursday (April 23, 2015) sentenced an Iraqi national to three years in prison over charges of joining a protest and arson. He is also to be deported after serving his sentence.

The defendant was convicted of taking part in an unauthorized rally in the capital, Manama, and setting fire, alongside other rioters, to six garbage containers with which they blocked the main highway. It was also announced that he confessed to the charges raised against him.

Detainees often complain of the torture they are subject to after being accused of participating in protests or expressing their opinions, and they always declare that their confessions were forced under the pressure of torture.
