Is fasting just to avoid food and drink?

SHAFAQNA – The Prophet of Islam (PBUH) told Jaber ibn Abdullah: In the Month of Ramadhan, whoever fasts during the day, and prays a part of the night, and keeps his stomach and private parts clean and pure (from Haram), and protects his tongue, will be cleansed from sins. Jaber said: How beautiful is this Hadith (narration). The Prophet (PBUH) replied: And how difficult it is to observe these conditions [1]. It is also narrated from Lady Fatima Zahra (AS) who said: If the one who is fasting, does not protect his/her tongue, ears, eyes and all parts of the body (from sins); what is the point of fasting [2]? In another narration regarding fasting, the Prophet of Islam (PBUH) said: Allah (SWT) said: The one who protects all parts of his/her body from Haram, I do not need that for My sake, he/she avoids eating and drinking [3].
