Joint statement on recent attacks in Iraq by 7 Shia prominent organisations in the UK

Shafaqna –  7 Shia prominent organisations in the UK issued a joint statement on recent attacks in Iraq.

According to Shafaqna the statement says: We, the undersigned UK Shia organisations, strongly condemn the atrocities being carried out by terrorists in Iraq, including the horrific massacres targeting Sunni worshipers at a mosque in Diyala on 22 August and the massacre that targeted Shia worshipers at a mosque in Baghdad on 25 August. We call on the Iraqi government to bring the perpetrators – whoever they may be – to justice as soon as possible.

With its offensive now stalling, the terrorist organisation ISIS, which goes by the name “Islamic State”, has increased efforts to ignite a sectarian war in Iraq, regularly targeting both Sunni and Shia civilians and places of worship in order to provoke ordinary Iraqis to start fighting each other. We call on the Iraqi government to do more to protect its citizens from these heinous and barbaric attacks and to foil the agenda of the terrorists.

We also strongly condemn the systematic attacks against the Christian, Yazidi, Shabak and Fayli Kurdish minorities and the concerted destruction and desecration of places of worship. We are deeply concerned about the plight of the Turkmen in the besieged town of Amerli in the Salahudin province. The local people of Amerli have been resisting ISIS for over two months. The terrorists have completely surrounded the town and the only relief comes in the way of intermittent humanitarian drops by Iraqi army helicopters. Like the Yazidis of Sinjar, the Turkmen of Amerli are in desperate need of both humanitarian aid and an international effort to rescue them from imminent slaughter. We call on both the Iraqi government and the international community to take immediate and practical measures to protect the population of Amerli from certain catastrophe.
