SHAFAQNA -Â Kyrgyzstan has become a full-fledged member of the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) after it formally abolished customs controls along its border with Kazakhstan.
Kyrgyzstan’s Presidnet Almazbek Atambaev and Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbaev took part in the ceremony marking the development on August 12 via a video link from a resort site where the two have been meeting near Issyk-Kul Lake in northern Kyrgyzstan.
Customs controls at eight checkpoints along the Kyrgyz-Kazakh border were lifted on August 12.
The agreement on Kyrgyzstan’s accession to the EEU was signed in December at a session of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in Moscow.
Protocols to the agreement were signed by EEU member states in May.
Kyrgyzstan is the fifth member of the group.
Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan signed a treaty on the EEU in Astana on May 29, 2014. It came into force on January 1, 2015.
Armenia signed its treaty to join the group in December 2014.
