Maintaining connection with irreligious family and relatives / the Grand Ayatollah Sistani’s Fatwa

SHAFAQNA – The Grand Ayatollah Sistani answered questions about maintaining connection with irreligious family and relatives.

Question: What is the ruling about maintaining connection with irreligious and sinful family/relatives? What if they commit sins in our presence?

The Grand Ayatollah Sistani: Connection with family/relatives must not be cut, but this does not mean visiting each other; rather the point is to maintain connection, and anyway, must try to guide them.

Question: Is maintaining connection with family/relatives Wajib, and what happens if it leads to backbiting or another Haram deed?

The Grand Ayatollah Sistani: Maintaining connection with family/relatives is Wajib, and cutting it, is Haram; and it means being kind and helpful to family/relatives and it is not necessary to take part in their gatherings; but if taking part involves committing sins, it is not allowed.
