Michael Brown Racism: White Protestors Told To Remain Unseen During Michael Brown Vigil In Toronto

SHAFAQNA – Organizers for a Michael Brown vigil held in Toronto instructed white protestors to “refrain from taking up space in all ways possible” and “never be at the center of anything.” Rules set for white protestors were a whole different set from those that people of color were given, Opposing Views reports.

Those arranging the protest Tuesday told “non black allies” to keep hidden from cameras and the media at the Tuesday vigil — an event created by a group called “Black Lives Matter.”

The Daily Mail posted a notice of the rules white protestors received before the demonstration.

WHITE/NON BLACK ALLIES

While we appreciate the solidarity shown by White and Non-Black POC, want to remind folks of some things:

-Please refrain from taking up space in all ways possible. Remember that you are there in support of black folks, so should never be at the center of anything

-Refrain from speaking to the media. Black voices are crucial to this

-Stand behind black folks or between us and the police

-If you see a cop harassing a black person, come in and engage. (chances are they are least likely to arrest you)

The vigil demonstration could be seen as being “hampered” in this instance since anti-racism is the point people want to make, yet stage directions are handed out before appearing in front of global media.

As the report goes on to say, peaceful protests were consumed from furious critics on Facebook, charging that “Black Lives Matter” were leading their own segregated group. Many commenters lashed out at the organization, accusing them of using racism to fight racism.

There were comments on both sides of the issue when it came to the Michael Brown vigil.

“Wow, is this an anti-racist rally or a pro-segregation one?” one Facebook user wrote.

Another Facebook user indicated that the rules outlined by “Black Lives Matter” made all the difference in attending any Michael Brown events publicly.

“Changed a lot for me. I will no longer be attending this event or supporting this cause,” the user wrote.

Then there blacks who view whites as the ones overshadowing their messages.

“So many white tears about the rules for allies… Why can’t you let black folk stand in the center and let their voices be heard, just for once,” a proponent of the rules said.

The controversial rules set forth by the Michael Brown vigil organizers has burst onto headline news with their preference for white protesters to be unseen in the middle of a racism crisis.
