Muslim clergy charged to educate congregations

SHAFAQNA – The National Chief Imam, Sheik Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has entreated Muslim clergy to educate their congregations on the need for them to access the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to ensure heath security.

He said sustainable economic growth could be achieved with a healthy human resource, for which reason all Ghanaians must be concerned with their health needs.

The Chief Imam made the call when the acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Mr Nathaniel Otoo, paid a courtesy call on him at his residence at Fadama, Accra, on Wednesday.

Mr Otoo explained that his visit was to ask for the Chief Imam’s blessing and appeal to his office to assist the authority in its effort to encourage more Muslims to register with the NHIS.

“As the leader of the Muslim community nationwide, we need you and your council of elders to serve as ambassadors in reaching out to the needy and poor in our communities,” he said.

The NHIS has so far registered 11 million people.

Mr Otoo said the NHIA needed the support of stakeholders to sustain its success and ensure that the country was closer to attaining the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2030.

Innovations

The NHIA, he said, had put in some mechanisms to ensure the effectiveness of the scheme, including the introduction of biometric cards for members, the establishment of four claim centres nationwide and the operation of a consolidated premium account to ensure that claims were paid into the facility’s accounts before 24 hours.

“Banks in the districts are also assisting the facility by collecting money on its behalf,” Mr Otoo said.

He urged the public to provide credible information for the Corporate Affairs Directorate of the NHIA that would benefit the scheme.

In response to the appeal made by Mr Otoo, the Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Office of the Chief Imam, Alhaji Gado Mohammed, promised support towards the effort to get Muslims to register for the NHIS.

“We will serve as liaison between your facility and our constituents,” he added.
