New earthquake in Japan

SHAFAQNA – Buildings in Japan were shaken, but there are no immediate reports of damage.

An 8.5 magnitude earthquake struck Saturday 194 km off Japan’s Ogasawara islands in the Pacific at a depth of 590 kilometres, the Japan Meteorological Agency reports. No tsunami alert has been issued so far.

Witnesses report that tremors were being felt in Tokyo, 870 kilometers from the epicenter.

Tokyo Electric Power Company operating the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant said there were “no abnormalities” at the plant following the earthquake.

The runways at Tokyo’s Narita airport were operating normally but the high-speed bullet train service between Tokyo and Osaka was halted due to a power outage, according to NHK.
