Obama to Netanyahu: Change status quo

Before his meeting with Netanyahu, Obama said they would discuss ways to find a “more sustainable peace between Israelis and Palestinians”.

SHAFAQNA- US President Barack Obama has called for a change in the status quo between Israel and the Palestinians in order to prevent another war in the Gaza Strip and advance peace.

“We realize we have to find ways to change the status quo, so that both Israelis feel safe in their homes and also you do not have the tragedy of Palestinian children being killed as well,” Obama told visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu before Oval Office talks on Wednesday.

Obama also described US-Israel relations as “unbreakable” and reiterated US “Iron clad commitment to Israel’s security.”

Obama also said that he would hold talks on the reconstruction of Gaza during his meeting.

Israel unleashed attacks on Gaza in early July and later expanded its military campaign with a ground invasion into the Palestinian territory. Over 2,130 Palestinians lost their lives and some 11,000 were injured. Gaza health officials say the victims included 578 children and nearly 260 women.

According to Israeli sources, more than 70 Israelis were also killed but Palestinian officials put this number at more than 150.

The weapons Israel used during its latest onslaught on the Gaza Strip also ruined the soil and killed any chances to grow crops for the farmers, whose sole income comes from the lands.

In addition, Israel keeps grabbing Palestinian natural resources, which are exacerbating the situation for the Gazans.
