Pakistanis slam school massacre in Peshawar

SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association)- People have held demonstrations in several cities across Pakistan to express outrage at a deadly attack by pro-Taliban militants on a military-run school in the country’s northwestern city of Peshawar.

On Wednesday, demonstrators took to the streets of a number of Pakistani cities, including the capital, Islamabad, chanted slogans for peace, and urged the government to take strong measures to tackle the militancy in the country.

Schools and shops remained closed in Peshawar, with people holding prayers for those killed in one of the bloodiest attacks in Pakistan’s recent history.

A group of gunmen reportedly dressed in military uniforms, stormed the Army Public School in Peshawar on Tuesday morning, going from classroom to classroom, shooting students and teachers.

The assault left at least 141 people, 132 of them children, dead and more than 100 others injured, according to the Pakistani military. The death toll, however, does not include the terrorists who attacked the school. All seven attackers were killed in the operation.

The militant group, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was carried out in retaliation for an ongoing Pakistani military offensive against the militants in the country’s tribal belt, which began on June 15.

The Pakistani government has announced a three-day official mourning following the Peshawar bloodshed.

Meanwhile, in neighboring India, schoolchildren and teachers have held a candle-light vigil in solidarity with the Pakistani school victims.

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has pledged to take “immediate action” against the pro-Taliban militants behind the attack.
