Poland warned UK to block migrant plans

SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association)- A senior Polish official has warned British Prime Minister David Cameron that Warsaw would block his plans to limit European Union migrants claiming benefits unless he applies the same punitive measures to Britons.

Rafal Trzaskowski, Poland’s deputy foreign minister, made the remarks in British media on Monday amid Cameron’s plans to curb EU migrants living in the UK.

Trzaskowski added that Cameron’s proposed measures to stop migrants from claiming benefits for the first four years living in the UK as well as deporting those who fail to find work after six months would go against all existing EU laws.

“If one wants to get away with all the benefits that are enshrined in the regulation of EU and treat immigrants from EU differently, and for example only pay benefits after four years of their stay in Britain or extradite people who can’t find work, that would be against all the existing laws of the EU and obviously that would be a red line for us,” said Trzaskowski.

In addition, the Polish minister said Britain’s welfare system should not discriminate against people on the grounds of nationality, adding Warsaw was ready to discuss any changes if the measures would apply to all residents regardless of citizenship.

Trzaskowski’s remarks came as Cameron has warned that the UK will not remain in the European Union if its pleas for immigration reform are ignored.

The British prime minister has admitted that his plans on curbing migration would require a change in EU legislation. However, such an amendment needs support from across the bloc.

Cameron’s Conservative Party, which is under growing pressure from the anti-EU UK Independence Party (UKIP), has said that it will try to cap immigration if re-elected in the May 2015 national elections.
