Police watchdog investigates after Mountie fatally shoots suspected drunk driver

SHAFAQNA (International Shia News Association)- An independent investigation has been launched after an RCMP officer fatally shot a suspected drunk driver in Castlegar, B.C., Thursday night.

RCMP said it received a complaint about a possible impaired driver at a Castlegar business. Later, a police officer located the vehicle and tried to stop the driver on Hwy. 3.

“The RCMP member exited the police vehicle and ultimately discharged his service pistol at the vehicle,” RCMP said in a statement early Friday.

Mounties declined to provide further details.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) said the man died in hospital. His identity hasn’t been released.

A team of five investigators, including a forensic specialist, was scheduled to arrive in Castlegar Friday morning.

Castlegar is about 620 km east of Vancouver.
