PressTV/ 69 Morsi, Muslim Brotherhood supporters sentenced to jail

SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association)- Egypt has sentenced 69 supporters of former President Mohamed Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood movement to up to 25 years in prison.

An Egyptian court on Wednesday sentenced 25 supporters of Morsi in absentia to 25 years in prison each. A separate court also handed down jail sentences ranging from one to 25 years to 44 people, including teenagers.

The defendants have been charged with staging unlicensed protests and having links with the Muslim Brotherhood.

Egypt has been experiencing unrelenting violence since Morsi, the country’s first democratically-elected president, was ousted in July 2013 in a military coup led by Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the country’s current president and then army commander.

Since then, the African country’s military-backed government has launched a heavy crackdown on Morsi’s supporters, arresting thousands of Muslim Brotherhood members, including the party’s senior leaders.

In December 2013, the military-installed government also declared the Muslim Brotherhood a “terrorist” group banning all its activities

Egyptians launched a revolution against Hosni Mubarak’s pro-Israeli regime in January 2011, which eventually brought an end to his 30-year dictatorship in February 2011.
