PressTV/ Afghanistan deputy governor shot dead in Kandahar

SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association)- The deputy governor of Afghanistan’s southern province of Kandahar has been killed by an unknown gunman on his way to a university class, local sources say.

Abdul Qadim Patyal was quickly taken to hospital after he was shot on Sunday, according to Tawab Ghorzang, a local official.

Officials at Kandahar’s Mirwaiz hospital confirmed that Patyal died of serious wounds he sustained in the attack.

“It is hard to believe that Patyal … is no longer among us. Rest in peace,” Ghorzang said in a post on his twitter page.

No group has claimed responsibility for the raid, but officials have blamed the Taliban for similar attacks in the past.

Kandahar province is considered one of the most restive parts in southern Afghanistan, where Taliban and other al-Qaeda-inspired militants are actively operating against local government targets as well as US-led foreign troops.

In one of the most recent political assassinations in Kandahar, a bomber killed Hashmat Karzai, a cousin of the country’s former President Hamid Karzai in July.

The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but the country is still gripped by insecurity despite the presence of thousands of foreign forces.
