SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association)- The Chinese Foreign Ministry has censured the US for comments on the country’s construction activities in a disputed section of the South China Sea.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying made the remarks on Monday, saying external forces did not have the right to make “irresponsible comments” on an artificial island in the Spratly Islands area.
“The construction-related activities undertaken by China on the islands are primarily to improve the living conditions of personnel stationed there and to better fulfill our international responsibilities and obligations in terms of search and rescue and the provision of public services,” she added.
China’s comments followed a US military spokesman urging Beijing to halt the construction of the artificial island that can apparently accommodate a runway.
US military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Pool called on China “to stop its land reclamation program and engage in diplomatic initiatives to encourage all sides to restrain themselves in these sorts of activities.”
Apart from China, the Spratly Island chain is also contested in whole or part by Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
