SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association) – Several exit polls indicate India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to win elections in two state legislatures currently ruled by the country’s Congress Party.
At least four exit polls released late Wednesday showed that the BJP will win either a majority or a significant number of the seats allocated to the western state of Maharashtra and the northern state of Haryana in the 245-member chamber.
State elections determine the number of seats parties have in the national upper house of parliament, known as the Rajya Sabha.
Nearly 100 million Indians were eligible to cast their ballots in the Wednesday assembly elections in the two states, which are important economic hubs of India.
The victory will follow intense campaigning by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his ruling center-right party in both key states. The results are expected to help the premier push through with sweeping economic reforms that he has promised.
“Modi magic continues. It’s a jackpot for BJP in Maharashtra,” said Today’s Chanakya, one of the pollsters that accurately predicted the party’s performance in the general election in May.
The official results are expected to be announced on Sunday.
In May, the BJP party, led by Modi, won 274 seats in the 543-seat lower house of parliament, the Lok Sabha.
