PressTV/ Kiev sending more troops to E Ukraine

SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association)- The government in Kiev is deploying more forces to the volatile eastern regions of Ukraine despite a ceasefire deal with pro-Russia forces.

Ukraine’s Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak told a government meeting on Wednesday that Ukrainian forces received reinforcements in preparation for what he called a possible offensive by pro-Russians in the east.

The announcement came after reports that pro-Russia forces are reinforcing their positions around the port city of Mariupol in the southeast. It also comes despite the truce deal signed between the two sides on September 5.

“We are repositioning our armed forces to respond to the actions of the [pro-Russian] fighters,” Poltorak said. “I see my main task is to prepare for military action,” he added.

Meanwhile, Kiev and NATO claimed that columns of Russian military equipment have been entering eastern Ukraine in the past two days.

Russia has repeatedly stated that it has no plan to send troops to Ukraine, saying such a move is against the fundamental interests of the country.

In mid-April, the Ukrainian army launched operations to crush pro-Russia protests in the mainly Russian-speaking regions in Ukraine’s east.

According to the latest figures by the United Nations, more than 4,000 people have been killed and around 10,000 others injured over the past months of conflict between the Ukrainian army and pro-Russians.
