SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association) – Russia’s Defense Ministry has dismissed an allegation by Stockholm that a Russian military aircraft nearly collided with a passenger plane over the southern part of Sweden.
The ministry said on Friday that its plane was at a safe distance of more than 70 kilometers (43 miles) from the flight path of the passenger jet, which had taken off from the Danish capital of Copenhagen.
Russian Defense Ministry spokesman, Major General Igor Konashenkov, said “there were no conditions for an aviation incident connected to the flight on Friday December 12 of a Russian military plane in the international airspace over the Baltic Sea.”
Earlier on Saturday, Swedish Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist said the Russian military aircraft was flying with its transponders turned off, making the plane invisible to commercial radar.
“This is serious. This is inappropriate. This is outright dangerous when you turn off the transponder,” Hultqvist added.
The Russian military spokesman responded that the flights of NATO military planes in the international space on Russia’s borders are “always carried out with the transponder switched off.”
“This doesn’t mean that Russia’s means of controlling the airspace do not spot them,” he said.
