SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association)- The United States says it has closed the notorious Bagram detention facility in Afghanistan.
The announcement on Wednesday came as a latest US drone strike killed 17 people including five Afghan students in the town of Siahgard, north of the capital, Kabul.
Afghan authorities said the airstrike was meant to target Taliban militants, but killed the students instead.
After a careful review by the Pentagon and the Department of State, the last “third-country nationals” in US custody were transferred, said a US official, whose name was not mentioned in the report.
The US military no longer operates any detention facilities in Bagram District, the official stated on Wednesday.
The move comes just a day after the US Senate Intelligence Committee released a damning report on the CIA’s torture program, which triggered worldwide condemnation.
Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani was among world leaders slamming the CIA program.
The 6,200-page report is the result of a 5-year Senate investigation into the 6.3 million documents reviewing the failure of the CIA spy agency that ran “the enhanced interrogation” program during the Bush administration. The 500-page summary of the report was made public on December 9.
The CIA’s torture program involved capturing terrorism suspects and shipping them to secret overseas prisons known as black sites, where they were subjected to harsh interrogation torture techniques such as water-boarding.
The Senate report concluded that the CIA interrogation techniques were an “ineffective means of acquiring accurate intelligence or gaining detainee cooperation.”
