SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association) – Beijing has strongly condemned foreign interference in Hong Kong’s affairs, which it calls interference in domestic affairs of China.

“I want to reiterate that affairs in Hong Kong are purely domestic affairs of China,” said Hua Chunying, a spokeswoman for China’s Foreign Ministry.

“Everyone has already seen that there are indeed some people, some forces in the world attempting to intervene in the affairs of Hong Kong; put pressure on the developments in Hong Kong. (They) even encourage, instigate and support illegal activities such as Occupy Central in Hong Kong. We have expressed our solemn position on it several times,” she noted.

The official added, “We resolutely oppose any foreign forces who attempt to intervene in the affairs of Hong Kong in any form.”

Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China. The financial hub has enjoyed substantial political autonomy since 1997, when its leadership returned to China after about a century of British colonial rule.

However, protesters in the region are calling for “open elections” for the territory’s next chief executive in 2017, rejecting a ruling from Beijing that candidates must be approved by a government-backed election committee.

The demonstrations have entered their fourth week.

Hua had previously said, “Hong Kong is China’s Hong Kong. Hong Kong is purely our internal affair.”
