PressTv/Pakistan cleric winds up Islamabad sit-in

SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association)- A critic of the Pakistani government has wound up a 65-day-long sit-in he was leading in the capital, saying it has served its purpose towards a “revolution”.

On Tuesday, Tahir-ul-Qadri announced the closure of this chapter of the protests, saying he would now tour major Pakistani cities, holding sit-ins and galvanizing for the launch of a “revolution of the poor.”

“This sit-in has achieved its purpose, it has awakened the nation and played its role in the path of revolution,” Qadri told thousands of his supporters.

Qadri, despite ending his Islamabad protest, has refuted claims he struck some sort of compromise deal with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s government.

The head of the Pakistan Awami Tehreek political party and Imran Khan, who heads the Tehreek-e-Insaf party, have been leading daily protest rallies in Islamabad since August 14.

The two led tens of thousands of marchers from the eastern city of Lahore to the capital on the day, which marks Pakistan’s Independence Day.

They say the country’s May 2013 general elections, which were won by Sharif’s party, were fraudulent. They want Sharif’s resignation and an overhaul of the country’s electoral system.
