Prophet Ibrahim’s Invocations

Translation: 2:126: And [mention] when Ibrahim said, “My Lord, make this a secure city and provide its people with fruits – whoever of them believes in Allah and the Last Day.” [Allah] said. “And whoever disbelieves – I will grant him enjoyment for a little; then I will force him to the punishment of the Fire, and wretched is the destination.”

Commentary: Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.) raised his hands and invoked Allah (SWT) to grant security to the city of Mecca [(رَبِّ اجْعَلْ هَـٰذَا بَلَدًا آمِنًا)] and provide its residents with sustenance and livelihood [(وَارْزُقْ أَهْلَهُ مِنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ)]. Security and livelihood are cornerstones of any sustainable society.

It would not be appropriate for Ibrahim to ask security and livelihood for adamant nonbelievers. Therefore, he qualified his invocation and said “provide [sustenance only to] those in the town who believe in God and the Day of Judgement.”

Allah (SW) answered Ibrahim’s prayer and said that those who disbelieve will enjoy safety and livelihood of Mecca for a short while. Afterwards they would be driven to the chastisement of the Fire and what an evil destination that is!

2:126: [Allah] said. “And whoever disbelieves – I will grant him enjoyment for a little; then I will force him to the punishment of the Fire, and wretched is the destination.”

Word-for-Word Translation:
2:126 [وَإِذْ] and remember when [قَالَ] said [إِبْرَاهِيمُ] Ibrahim [رَبِّ] my Lord [اجْعَلْ] make [هَـٰذَا] this [بَلَدًا] a city [آمِنًا] of a security [وَارْزُقْ] and provide [أَهْلَهُ] its people [مِنَ] with [الثَّمَرَاتِ] fruits [مَنْ] who [آمَنَ] believed [مِنْهُم] of them [بِاللَّـهِ] in Allah [وَالْيَوْمِ] and Day [الْآخِرِ] of the Last [قَالَ] He said [وَمَن] and who [كَفَرَ] disbelieve [فَأُمَتِّعُهُ] I would let him enjoy (leave him in contentment) [قَلِيلًا] for a short while [ثُمَّ] then [أَضْطَرُّهُ] I shall compel him [إِلَىٰ] to [عَذَابِ] torment [النَّارِ] of the Fire [وَبِئْسَ] and worst is that [الْمَصِيرُ] destination.
